Murano sommerso is a glass-making technique that originated on the island of Murano, near Venice, Italy. The term "sommerso" is Italian for "submerged," and the technique involves layering different colors of glass, one on top of the other, while the glass is still molten. 

To create a piece using the Murano sommerso technique, glassmakers start by creating a solid glass core in one color. They then dip the core into a pot of molten glass of a different color, which coats the outside of the core. The glassmaker will repeat this process, layering different colors of glass over the previous layers, until they achieve the desired effect.

The result is a piece of glass that appears to have one color submerged within another. The technique can be used to create a variety of shapes and objects, including vases, bowls, sculptures, and more. Murano sommerso glass is prized for its beauty, as well as the skill and artistry required to create it.

The Murano sommerso technique has been used by many of the most famous Murano glassmaking firms, including Venini, Seguso, and Barovier & Toso. It remains a popular technique among contemporary glass artists, and it is considered one of the signature styles of Murano glass.
