Enzo Mari

Enzo Mari (1932–2020) was one of Italy’s most influential and provocative designer‑theorists, known for his clarity, essential forms, and a deeply humanist, anti‑industrial philosophy.

Trained at the Brera Academy in Milan, he created more than 2,000 designs across furniture, lighting, objects, and graphics, championing design as a tool for social and cultural reflection.

Iconic Works

Mari’s most collected pieces include the Compasso d’Oro–winning Delfina chair for Driade and the minimalist Sof‑Sof chair and Frate table, which embody his pursuit of structural honesty and simplicity.

He also produced beloved desk objects and accessories for Danese Milano, such as the Timor perpetual calendar, 16 Animali puzzle, and Putrella centrepiece, all reflecting his love of geometry and craft.

Legacy

A multiple Compasso d’Oro winner and author of the seminal Autoprogettazione? (1974) DIY furniture manifesto, Mari’s work is held in major museums worldwide and remains a touchstone for thoughtful, enduring design where theory, craft, and everyday life meet.
