Gaetano Pesce (1939–2024) was a visionary Italian architect and designer whose work dissolved the boundaries between art, design, and social commentary.

Trained in architecture at the University of Venice, he emerged as a leading figure of Radical Design and later influenced the Memphis generation with bold forms, experimental materials, and an unapologetically expressive visual language.

Iconic Works

Pesce’s most celebrated pieces include the groundbreaking UP series for B&B Italia (1969), especially the anthropomorphic UP5_6 “La Mamma” chair with its ball‑and‑chain ottoman, a symbol of femininity and constraint.

His sculptural Feltri armchair for Cassina (1987), the Tramonto a New York sofa, and his vibrant Fish Design resin objects further showcase his innovations in foam, felt, and polyester resin.

Legacy
