Italian Mid-Century Ceramic Vase by Aldo Londi

This sculptural glazed ceramic vase was designed by Aldo Londi as part of the celebrated “Sahara” series, associated with Bitossi Ceramiche in Montelupo Fiorentino, Italy. Dating from around 1970, the vase features a distinctive cylindrical architectural form decorated with richly textured horizontal bands in green, ochre, orange, cream and brown.

The Sahara series

The Sahara series is characterised by its warm desert-inspired palette and deeply worked geometric surface decoration. Bands of impressed and incised motifs alternate with vividly glazed sections, creating the tactile surface and graphic rhythm characteristic of Londi’s ceramic work during this period. Comparable documented examples were produced by Bitossi, with some examples also bearing Cer Paoli markings.

Aldo Londi and Italian ceramic design

Aldo Londi was one of the defining figures of post-war Italian ceramics and served as artistic director of Bitossi for decades. His work combined traditional Tuscan ceramic techniques with highly recognisable modern forms, experimental glazes and expressive surface decoration. The Sahara series is a particularly decorative example of this approach.
