Sculptural Axel Enthoven Dining Set

A striking 1980s dining suite comprising six sculptural dining chairs and a matching rectangular dining table, attributed to Belgian designer Axel Enthoven. The suite is characterised by its expressive curved construction, repeated bundled forms and deep reddish-brown finish, creating a highly architectural presence.

Curved Bamboo Construction

The six dining chairs feature dramatic continuous lines that sweep from the backrests through the arms and into the substantial front supports. Multiple parallel lengths of curved bamboo create the distinctive layered silhouette, while the table base repeats the same bundled construction, visually connecting every element of the suite.

The chairs are designed with upholstered seat pads, allowing the upholstery to provide a contrasting material and colour against the rich finish of the frames.

European 1980s Design

The suite captures the experimental approach to natural materials found throughout European furniture design of the late 1970s and 1980s. Enthoven's furniture for Dutch manufacturer Rohé Noordwolde similarly explored steam-bent and bundled construction, creating sculptural furniture from repeated curved elements. Documented Enthoven chairs from the period were manufactured in the Netherlands using bamboo and cane construction.
