As its name suggests, the Universale was intended to be a chair for universal use: You can set it up in rows, it is stackable and the lower parts of its legs are interchangeable, making the seat height variable. The opening in the middle of the backrest ensures that the chair is easy to carry and that no water collects when used outdoors. In the design of the Universale, Joe Colombo combined the strict geometry of modern aesthetics with softer lines. With this combination, which is characteristic of many of his designs, he became one of the key figures of Italian design in the 1960s."
