Murano sommerso ashtrays are a type of ashtray made using the "sommerso" glassmaking technique that originated on the island of Murano, near Venice, Italy. Sommerso means "submerged" in Italian, and it refers to the process of layering different colors of glass to create a three-dimensional effect.

Murano sommerso ashtrays are typically made by layering multiple colors of glass and then shaping the glass into a bowl-like form with a slight depression in the center to hold cigarettes or ashes. The layers of glass create a rich, almost liquid-looking effect, and the ashtrays often feature geometric shapes and vibrant colors.

Sommerso ashtrays were popular in the mid-20th century, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s, and were produced by a number of glassmaking companies on Murano, including Venini, Seguso, and Barovier & Toso. Some of the most collectible Murano sommerso ashtrays were designed by prominent artists such as Flavio Poli, who is known for his innovative use of the sommerso technique in his glasswork.
