Sculptural Italian Rattan Dining Chairs

A striking set of six dining chairs designed by Marzio Cecchi for Studio Most, Italy, dating from the 1970s. Characterised by their exceptionally tall backs, architectural proportions and expressive use of wood and woven rattan, the chairs embody Cecchi’s distinctive approach to Italian radical and postmodern design.

Marzio Cecchi’s Architectural Approach to Seating

The design features a dramatic high-backed silhouette, with slender timber frames articulated by decorative ring details that give the structure a bamboo-like appearance. Panels of woven cane and rattan form the backrests, seats and curved front supports, creating a sophisticated contrast between the dark stained timber and the natural texture of the cane. The unusual curved front panels give the chairs a particularly sculptural presence when viewed around a dining table.

Studio Most and 1970s Italian Design

Designed by Marzio Cecchi for Studio Most, these chairs reflect the experimentation taking place in Italian furniture design during the 1970s, when traditional materials were increasingly used in unconventional and architectural forms. Cecchi’s work is recognised for its highly individual proportions and inventive construction, and this set combines the warmth of natural rattan and timber with a bold, almost theatrical profile. Offered here as a set of six chairs, separate from their original accompanying dining table.
