A striking Italian Murano glass ashtray dating from the 1960s, distinguished by its substantial sculptural form and sophisticated combination of deep smoked glass and crystal-clear glass. Hand-crafted with remarkable weight and clarity, the piece is signed “Bonini” to the underside, accompanied by a numerical inscription.

Sculptural Murano Glass

The ashtray is formed from a substantial mass of hand-crafted glass, with a rich smoky body seemingly suspended within a thick layer of clear crystal. Its rounded asymmetric profile is elevated on a transparent glass foot, giving the piece an architectural quality while allowing light to travel beautifully through the contrasting layers of glass.

Smoked & Clear Glass

The contrast between the dark smoked interior and exceptionally thick clear glass creates a dramatic sense of depth. Viewed from different angles, the colour shifts from almost black to translucent smoky brown, while the polished rim catches and refracts the surrounding light. A single sculpted cigarette rest is seamlessly incorporated into the upper edge.

Signed Italian Design

A refined example of post-war Italian decorative glass, the piece reflects the experimentation with colour, transparency and substantial sculptural forms associated with Murano production during the mid-20th century.
